Self Improvement And Makeover Reality Television
Self improvement and makeovers are two things that most people can't get or afford on a regular basis. In addition, the show's producers have everything to gain by bending the laws of physics, for short of a better phrase, to make a makeover happen. A lot of times, without the incentives of higher viewership, audience entertainment, and producer aggrandizement, there won't be a makeover or self improvement event comparable in the real world that can compete. In other words, these are like extreme makeovers. Even a costly attempt to makeover someone outside of a television show can end up in failure, but these shows will stop at nothing to effect a makeover. Oftentimes, these shows are more about transformations than makeovers, and that is a sub-genre of this sub-genre all together.
Sometimes, a group of people are covered over an entire season because some kinds of makeover take time to effect like weight loss or careers. However, there are improvement markers in each episode. Some of the self improvement shows include The Swan and Celebrity Fit Club. The first episode usually introduces the contestants in their paltry state. Then, a panel of experts meets with the contestants and offers them expert advice on how to improve their state. These same experts usually help the contestants throughout the show. At the end of the show, the contestants are placed back in their normal environment, and they get assessments from all their friends, family, and co-workers. Even shows that don’t focus on the person, per se, still have an assessment period at the end. Furthermore, a host introduces the subject to a panel of experts in each kind of self improvement show. For example, in Pimp My Ride, a contestant sends in a picture of his or her horrible automobile, and the show’s host then meets with the contestant and gets their car to a panel of experts for their work on how to improve the vehicle. The car is then returned to the owner with assessments by friends, family, and co-workers to follow. The format is always the same whether the subject is a person, car, career, weight loss, or makeup. The goal is to get the person in a new state of things through the helpful advice of experts before being returned to their normal environment.
There are versions of the self improvement show for every aspect of life like fashion, weight loss, physical appearance, style and grooming, child-rearing, attaining difficult goals, fashion and grooming, fashion makeover and marriage, relationship building, manners, self improvement, and etiquette. There is a whole audience of Americans that is interested in how other American can improve themselves. Shows like The Biggest Loser, Fat March, Extreme Makeover, Queer Eye For The Straight Guy, Supernanny, Nanny 911, World’s Strictest Parents, Made, What Not To Wear, Trinny & Susannah Undress, Tool Academy, Flavor Of Love Girls: Charm School, Rock Of Love Girls: Charm School 2, From G’s To Gents, The Girls Of Hedsor Hall, The Bad Girls Club, and Bad Girls Road Trip are all varieties of the self improvement genre.
From G’s To Gents, as an example, is a great show for showing how a social experiment can be adapted into a self improvement show. People from one station in life and lifestyle are voluntarily put through a series of changes that turn them into more respectable citizens. This is a show that parents can show their children that are having a hard time not being vagabonds and becoming respectable citizens.
