Pit Bull Programming
A smear campaign has been launched against pit bulls, a breed of dog that, thanks to the media, has been labeled dangerous. It would surprise people to know that only a very small percentage of dog bites come from pit bulls. Additionally, few people know that these creatures are excellent family pets. Reality TV has stepped in to combat the bad public image these dogs have been given. Another problem addressed by these shows is the fact that there aren’t enough shelters for these animals and most of them are killed when caught or surrendered. It is the mission of the people depicted in the following shows to find safe, reliable homes for these amazing animals.
Pit Bulls and Parolees
Not only does Pit Bulls and Parolees showcase the issues affecting these dogs, it also highlights the problems ex-convicts have getting a job. Tia Marie Torres, the owner of Villalobos Rescue Center, decided to take in pit bulls and parolees after her boyfriend faced legal issues himself. Hers is the largest pit bull shelter in the country; it houses around 200 to 250 dogs at a time.
Each sixty minute show highlights different aspects of running the shelter. The team is often called out to rescue a wandering stray. At other times, they pick up an animal that is no longer wanted by its owner. The show often highlights the volunteers, which are sometimes celebrities, who come to help feed, water, and clean the animals.
Pit Boss
While Pit Bulls and Parolees pairs the dogs and ex-convicts, Pit Boss matches them with little people. Shorty’s Rescue is owned by Shorty Rossi, who is a former actor and little person. His employees are also all little people. The show depicts their efforts towards educating people about pit bulls. Additionally, the staff works to rescue and find homes for the animals.
The two shows described above are part of a new breed of reality TV show. Activists are using the reality TV industry to get their message out. Other examples of this is evident in shows like Whale Wars. Learn more about this awesome breed that just has a bad reputation by watching these shows.
