Antiques Roadshow
The popular PBS program that follows real antique experts to evaluate people’s junk around the country. Those with interesting items are shown discussing the item with the expert. People have walked in with a 50-cent vase and walked out with one worth $5000! Many people have taken items they found in junk shops, garages, and attics to these shows and walk away in need of insurance for said item because it’s worth so much. Family heirlooms are also often appraised by the experts of the show. The hosts of the show frequently visit the local spots associated with antiques and history.
Pawn Stars
Rick Harris, his father (known as “the Old Man”), and his son Cory “Big Hoss” Harris run the Gold & Silver Pawn Shop in Las Vegas. People seem to bring some of the most intriguing items in to sell or pawn to Rick. The program has featured Super Bowl rings, authentic Shelby Cobras, WWII knives, Revolutionary War guns, and commemorative tokens from George Washington’s funeral. Also included in the show are the humorous outcomes of goofy employee Chum Lee’s attempts to make wine and Rick’s struggle to educate Chum Lee and Cory on how to avoid fake merchandise.
American Pickers
Mike Wolfe and Frank Fritz travel the country in search of junk. Or at least, that’s what most people would call it. They travel to the homes of collectors and hoarders and search for items you wouldn’t think were worth much. Old rusty signs, odds and ends, and old knick knacks float their boats. Decrepit bikes, vintage Coke memorabilia, and movie posters get their goat. As they tally up the purchases, they tally up their estimated earnings, showing you just how profitable junking can be.
Get rid of junk by watching TV. Pick a few items to take to an antique shop to be evaluated. You never know what junk may be worth a fortune.
